What's special about these apps?
It's not just about coding / designing the apps. It's about the research, too. Every feature in our apps is based on domain & UX research. The research is based on issues around our society / community.
My teams and I at the Apple Developer Academy used CBL (Challenge-based learning) methodology to research our applications: cycles of Engage → Investigation → Act.
In short,
- Engage is when
- You decide on a big idea (big/broad theme, i.e. music, games, health, jobs, donation, etc.)
- You convert it into a question of "how to fix issue A in community B?" called the essential question.
- You then convert that question into an actionable statement called challenge.
- Investigate is when
- You take time to research your topic, finding the underlying problems & solutions.
- Learn the skills (design, tech, domain knowledge, etc.) needed to build the solutions.
- You may want to revise the challenge statement, if you narrow down to a more specific subject.
- Act is when
- You develop and implement the solution.
- You make an evaluation of your journey throughout the cycle, and glean lessons learned.
- You make an improvement plan for the next CBL cycle (same Engage → Investigate → Act, but with sharper focus)
